Mission & Values

Mission

Ursuline Academy of New Orleans, founded in 1727, prepares confident and compassionate leaders for a diverse global society through Catholic spiritual formation, academic excellence, and a life-long commitment to Serviam: I will serve.

Ideals

Courtesy, Loyalty, Courage

Core Values

An Ursuline school cultivates its Catholic Christian identity and instills Ursuline values, heritage, history, and the spirit of St. Angela within its programs and activities.

Our Promise

To succeed in tomorrow's world, we believe girls must learn to think creatively, articulate their ideas confidently and compassionately, and solve problems collaboratively. Our girls will be ready.

Through highly interactive experiences powered by STEM and the arts -- and a nurturing community diverse by design -- we develop tomorrow's brightest independent thinkers, innovators, and community builders

Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging

“If, according to times and circumstances, the need arises to make new rules or do something differently, do it prudently and with good advice.” - St. Angela MericiWhile the traditions and values of an Ursuline education are timeless, we believe now, more than ever, is the perfect time to heed Saint Angela’s words and make plans to address the changing times and circumstances. We believe girls must learn to think
creatively, articulate their ideas confidently and compassionately, and solve problems collaboratively with cultural competence. Our girls need to see, hear, and understand the diversity of people, perspectives, and points of view around them and the world they will lead in the years ahead. They must be able to identify, analyze, and act on issues of equity, justice, and inclusion integrated with our mission, the philosophy of our foundress, and our values.

In the Summer of 2020, a Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DIB) Task Force was commissioned by the Academy President. The group was intentionally inclusive of parents, alumnae, students, faculty, staff, and other members of the extended Ursuline community. It was also very diverse in terms of gender, ethnicity, age, geographic location, and profession.

The DIB Task Force provided recommendations to create a more diverse, inclusive, and welcoming Ursuline community, which enables all Ursuline girls to feel they belong, utilizing Ursuline’s mission, philosophy, and core values as a backdrop
for recommendations. A copy of the strategic plan can be found below.

Code of Belonging

Ursuline is diverse on purpose--and we like it that way. Our Academy celebrates girls with different backgrounds, beliefs, and talents. Each morning, our girls recite a Code of Belonging to foster a sense of inclusivity and to remind our students that we are one Ursuline sisterhood.

Identity Assessment

As a sponsored school of the Ursulines of the Roman Union Central Province, Ursuline Academy participates in an identity assessment every five years. The Ursuline Identity Assessment is an opportunity to reflect on the school’s uniqueness, make connections with others who share the spirit of St. Angela, and foster the shared identity which exists among sister-schools. This process will allow for community reflection and processing to ensure each Ursuline school experiences an affirmation of its commitment to its Ursuline identity and has the opportunity to deepen that commitment in every area. Ursuline Academy of New Orleans' last self-assessment took place during the 2023-2024 school year.
