Dr. Margarita O'Byrne Curtis '69 has been named the 2020-2021 Interim President of Ursuline Academy of New Orleans. Dr. Curtis graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1969 after her family immigrated to New Orleans from Colombia, South America. She later earned undergraduate degrees from Tulane University and the University of Minnesota Mankato. She completed her Master's and then a Doctorate at Harvard University in Romance Languages and Literatures. She has held many distinguished teaching and administrative positions, including several years teaching at Harvard University and as the Dean of Studies at the Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. She retired in May of 2019 after 13 years as the Head of School at the prestigious Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. Her accolades, skills and experience are as inspiring as they are extensive. Her global viewpoint, having traveled to over 50 countries, her commitment to service and her Catholic faith perfectly align with the mission of Ursuline Academy of New Orleans.
Dr. Curtis states: "It is my intention, and my deepest aspiration, to move the Academy forward in positive ways in the year ahead. I look forward to collaborating with you and the other members of the Board, and all of the Academy's constituencies. Most especially, I look forward to the daily interaction with Ursuline students, and to serving them in the same way that I was nurtured and supported by the Ursuline Sisters half a century ago. I have been guided and inspired by the school's motto, SERVIAM, all my life and hope to make myself worthy of the Board's and the Sisters' vote of confidence in me. I accept the responsibility and honor of this appointment with humility and sincere enthusiasm."
We welcome her back home to State Street and we look forward to the 2020-2021 school year.
