Friday's Serviam Mass was special in more ways than one! Our newest high school students received their Serviam pins. Serviam, our Academy motto meaning “I will serve,” is a calling for our young women to use their unique gifts and talents to help those in need.
During Mass, we recognized two seniors who attended last summer’s Beyond Our Borders service trip. In 2019, six former seniors and two present seniors, along with Beth Joubert ’80 and Sue Dorsey Heidel ’85, traveled to West Virginia to work on Bethlehem Farm for a week. Bethlehem Farm is a Catholic community in Appalachia that transforms lives through service with the local community and teaches of sustainable practices.
We also recognized both our interim and incoming Academy Presidents - Dr. Margarita O'Byrne Curtis '69 and Dr. Karen Jakuback - two women whose call to service led them to State Street. One returned home and the other has made Ursuline home.
Dr. Margarita O’Byrne Curtis, Sioux of 1969, answered the call to serve and has done so faithfully as Interim Academy President since last summer. We thank her for her commitment to her Alma Mater and we are grateful for all she has accomplished in not only a short period of time, but throughout a pandemic as well. Incoming President Dr. Karen Jakuback officially joined our Ursuline family a couple of weeks ago – also answering a call to serve.
