At the Ursuline Academy home field along the banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the Varsity Lions clashed with the Cabrini Crescents. Cabrini kicked off the match right at 6 p.m., but the Lions smartly took possession and Senior McKenna Brannan made a solid run up the left side deep into the Crescents defense. Cabrini on the steal played a long ball that was deftly taken by prefreshman Aribelle Holley and driven up to Sophomore Isabella Suarez.
The battle raged on for rugged tussles mainly in the midfield with the Lions eventually taking 6 shots and the Crescents taking 8 by the end of the first half. Junior Goalkeeper Jenna Hoisington was steady with 5 saves in the first half.
The weary teams went to the sidelines to scheme up the second half as the river fog emerged heavy on the pitch. The Crescents came out strong with torching speed in the second half taking numerous runs deep into the Lions end and challenging the Lions rugged keeper repeatedly. In the 47th minute the Crescents scored. Returning fire, the Lions made a brilliant pass to Junior Emma Scobel who broke free of defenders down the right side, firing off a great opportunity towards the net; but it went errant. Then, in the 70th minute the Crescents scored again on a perimeter shot. Our Lions never quit battling hard until the final whistle. The final score was Cabrini 2, Ursuline 0.
There's much more soccer to play for this young team. Next up, H.L. Bourgeios on Saturday at the Audubon Riverview (Fly). The soccer world is excited about our team!
