7th Grade celebrates Holiday hot chocolate party with handmade ceramic mugs.

This quarter 7th grade art students explored a new medium: ceramics! Artists learned about the physical and chemical changes that happens to clay during its natural drying and kiln firing process. Knowledge of each stage of clay helps artists project plan to their advantage.

7th graders also learned proper joining using "score, slip, stick, and smooth". Once artists explored the material and techniques during an open studio, they completed a summative slab construction project: ceramic mugs.

To create a successful mug, artists needed to properly roll a clay slab, create and use a template, and successfully join the slab together. After bisque-firing our pieces, artists glazed their mugs to make them more durable and colorful. We celebrated the end of our ceramics unit with a hot chocolate party testing out our handmade mugs!
