Lions Soccer Lose to 2021 State Runner Up Sacred Heart
Challenging a strong opponent demands much. Ursuline Lions were on a three-game win streak coming into a game at Pan American Stadium on January 27th. Our young team found another gear in the 3 recent victories against District opponent NOMMA, Helen Cox and District opponent Kenner Discovery. Even with this momentum, our girls knew they had a tough challenge versus the Academy of the Sacred Heart. ASH had been State Runners Up last year in Division IV.
The Joyce Chapman quote says, "If your dream is a big dream, and if you want your life to work on the high level you say you do, there’s no way around doing the work it takes to get you there." The big dream is to pressure the stronger opponent - make them have to work to beat you by having no errors. Our girls did that on the night - allowing 2 goals in the first half on 18 shots. As part of the catenaccio tactics employed, our girls moved to limit what Sacred Heart could do.
It was Senior Night for the 2021 Finalists. The Cardinals thought they might be able to score 8 and end the match early. The determined State Street team was steely eyed and lionhearted about playing a solid strategy to prevent the mercy rule. Then, in the second half our girls fought hard. Great keeper play from both Jenna Hoisington and Gracie Frank limited the Cardinals again to 2 goals – for a 4-0 final.
Coach Harry Mason said, “Solid tonight against a very good team. Very disciplined and worked hard after putting in a shift last night, too. So great job.”
