Our high school students are studying cells. They began their study by weighing cells that were placed into different environments. Both the cells and the environment were filled with either water or sucrose. Cells were later weighed to see the net movement of water. Depending on the cell and environment, the cell either gained or lost weight.
Going along with cell transport, students looked to see if starch and glucose were able to diffuse out of a cell. Students made cells and put them in water in previous classes. Using indicator tests, they looked to see if either glucose or starch was able to diffuse across the membrane - physically seeing a color change when a positive test occured. Glucose was able to move from the inside of their mock "cell" to the outside - showing them diffusion in action.
