Loyola Exhibits Alumna as "Voice for Social Justice"

Did U(A) know? Ursuline College graduate of 1936 and Distinguished Alumna, Janet Mary Riley, is the first female law professor in New Orleans. Loyola University, Janet's college alma mater, is currently displaying an exhibit called Janet Mary Riley: A Voice for Social Justice in Louisiana.

She is considered "a pioneering women of civil and women's rights." She wrote the legal brief for the historic civil rights case, Lombard v. Louisiana. "During her tenure as a law professor, she wrote the first casebook on Louisiana Community Property Law and served as a Louisiana Law Institute reporter where she revised Louisiana community property laws that deemed the husband 'head and master of the community.' Riley was instrumental in convincing the legislature to adopt the concept of equal management."
